Reading buttons from an HID

Hello, everyone.

I just bought a new computer, which runs Windows 8. I have a flight simulator panel which contains a 64 button HID card. It worked fine under XP. It showed up in 'game controllers' just like a joystick except it had no axes, just 64 buttons. In Windows 8, though, it only shows under Devices as a generic HID, and in flight simulator it doesn't show at all, so I cannot assign the buttons to controls. The maker went out of business, and cannot be contacted. I do have his "USB Toolkit" software though, and when I run that it shows the buttons, and they light up when pressed.

It shows this data for the device....
Device: 1
Device Type: 0X64B USB MODULE
Vendor ID: 6666
Product ID: 300
Firmware Version: 1.01
Serial Num: N/A
Data Inputs: 64

I've done some VB programming, but never anything related to USB or HID's. Can anyone point me to some tutorials or guides to try to make an app to read the button status?

Richard
